Halloween scarefest in South Wales – join us for Monsters of the Mine, where gruesome monsters await in the dark.

The Ultimate scare-fest in South Wales | Zip World Monsters of the Mine

October half term and Halloween are just around the corner! If Ffear Fforest is the Halloween scare-fest to know about in North Wales, then Monsters of the Mine at Zip World Tower is its suitably sinister South Wales counterpart. The event returns this October, promising an evening where the monsters are never far away and world-class adventures run all night.

What to expect at Monsters of the Mine

Monsters of the Mine is Zip World Tower’s immersive Halloween experience at Tower Colliery, near Aberdare.Visitors are thrown into a full evening of scares and adventure as the former mining site becomes the monsters' territory, with creatures roaming around the attraction and looking for unsuspecting visitors.

The event has become a regular fixture in the South Wales Halloween calendar, combining Zip World's adventures with an immersive horror experience. And the scares begin before you've even reached the reception. The monsters can appear as soon as you arrive in the car park and even your vehicle isn't necessarily a safe place to hide.

Tower Colliery already has an industrial, imposing character, with the old mining landscape providing a very different backdrop to a conventional Halloween attraction. Once darkness falls and the monsters start appearing, the site takes on a completely different personality. There's no shortage of adrenaline either.

Depending on your ticket, you can be hurtling through the darkness on the Terror Coaster, flying above the monsters on Fear Flyer or Phoenix, or tackling the Cursed Climber while creatures attempt to distract you.

When and where?

Date: 9th October – 1st November 2026
Time: 7:30pm – 10:30pm
Location: Zip World Tower Colliery, Aberdare, CF44 9UF
Minimum age: 9+ (Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. Adventure restrictions also apply.)

The attraction is around 40 minutes by car from Cardiff, with bus and train links available nearby.

Is Monsters of the Mine worth it?

Its combination of an atmospheric former coal-mining site, roaming monsters and genuine adventure activities makes it feel considerably bigger than a standard haunted attraction. You can choose your level of terror, too. The Spectator Pass lets you enjoy the atmosphere without taking on the rides, while the Terror Coaster options give you a mixture of scares and adrenaline. And for those who want to go all-in, Phoenix adds a high-speed zip-line experience above the monsters.

For groups of friends, it's the kind of Halloween night where the scares become stories afterwards particularly when somebody discovers that the monster they were trying to escape was standing behind them the entire time.

So, if you're looking for a Halloween event in South Wales that combines real adventure with real scares, make your way to Tower Colliery this October.
