Dolwyddelan Castle
Dolwyddelan Castle stands dramatically on a rocky ridge in the Lledr Valley, surrounded by the wild beauty of Eryri (Snowdonia). Built in the early 13th century by Llewelyn the Great, one of Wales’s most powerful native princes, the castle played a key role in defending the mountain passes of North Wales. Its strategic location gave it control over an important route through Eryri (Snowdonia) and symbolised Welsh resistance to English expansion.
What remains today is a single, sturdy stone tower.
The setting, with sweeping views of the surrounding hills and forests, is peaceful and atmospheric, offering a strong sense of the past amid natural splendour. Though the castle is partly in ruins, the keep is well-preserved and can be climbed for even better views of the valley below.
Dolwyddelan Castle is less visited than some of Wales’s grander fortresses, making it a great choice for those seeking quiet exploration and a deeper connection with the landscape. A short uphill walk from the nearby road leads to the castle, making it an easy detour for history lovers, hikers, or anyone travelling through Eryri (Snowdonia).
