Hill Top Farm

Hill Top is the former home of Beatrix Potter, located in the quiet village of Near Sawrey in the Lake District. The 17th-century farmhouse was bought by Potter in 1905 with the proceeds from her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and she used it as a retreat and source of inspiration for many of her later stories.

The house is preserved exactly as she left it, with each room filled with her original furniture, personal belongings, and objects that appear in her illustrations. The surrounding cottage garden is planted with a mix of traditional flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees, carefully maintained to reflect the setting of her tales.

Visits to Hill Top operate on a timed-entry ticket system, which should be booked in advance, especially during school holidays and weekends. Parking is available near the site, but it is limited, so many visitors choose to arrive by walking from the Windermere ferry landing at Far Sawrey.

Inside the house, space is tight and stair access is required to view the upper rooms, so accessibility is limited. There is a small café nearby serving light refreshments, and a well-stocked gift shop offers Beatrix Potter books, prints, and souvenirs.

Hill Top is best enjoyed by those with an interest in literature, heritage, or the peaceful countryside that inspired one of Britain’s most beloved authors.
