Levens Hall

Remarkable gardens, rich history, and tranquil atmosphere, Levens Hall & Gardens promises a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.

Step into a world of history, artistry, and horticultural excellence

Levens Hall & Gardens is a magnificent Elizabethan mansion located just outside Kendal in the South Lakes. Privately owned and lovingly preserved, this historic home is best known for its extraordinary topiary gardens - the oldest of their kind in the world.

Inside the hall, visitors can explore beautifully maintained interiors rich with Jacobean panelling, ornate plasterwork, fine period furniture, and a fascinating collection of family portraits and artefacts. The house offers a glimpse into centuries of life lived within its walls, from its origins in the 13th century to the present day.

The gardens are a true highlight of any visit. Designed in the late 17th century, the world-famous topiary gardens are filled with over 100 intricately clipped box and yew trees, forming whimsical shapes, abstract forms, and living sculptures. Alongside the topiary, the grounds boast herbaceous borders, a rose garden, orchard, wildflower meadows, and a charming willow labyrinth.

Guests can enjoy freshly prepared, seasonal dishes in the Levens Kitchen café, which prides itself on using ingredients grown in the estate’s own gardens. The gift shop offers unique souvenirs, local products, and gardening gifts inspired by the Hall and grounds.
