Lancaster Castle

Its early history is unclear, but it may have been founded in the 11th century on the site of a Roman fort because of its position on the River Lune.

This Grade 1 Listed Building occupies a city-centre hilltop location on the site of three successive Roman forts

This once historical strong-hold was a functioning HM Prison up until 2011. Since HMP Lancaster Castle was decommissioned by the Ministry of Justice and the Castle returned to the Duchy of Lancaster in 2012, the focus has very much been on the preservation and restoration of the fabric of this historic building. Guided tours offer a fantastic and truly original glimpse into the Castle's past. Explore the exquisitely decorated courtrooms, dark prison cells and sombre sites of execution. Explore the many fascinating parts of this castle including the many prison wings it once housed and the impressive John o' Gaunt Gatehouse -it's perhaps the finest gatehouse of its date and type in England.
