Caernarfon Castle
Standing proudly at the mouth of the River Seiont in Gwynedd, Caernarfon Castle was commissioned by King Edward I in 1283 during his conquest of Wales, it was built not only as a stronghold but as a statement of dominance over the newly subdued territory. Its design deliberately evokes the grandeur of imperial Rome and Byzantine Constantinople, symbolising Edward’s power and legitimacy.
Caernarfon Castle is one of the most magnificent and historically significant castles in Wales.
Unlike the typical round towers of other Edwardian castles, Caernarfon’s polygonal towers, banded stonework, and imposing Eagle Tower reflect this symbolic intent. The castle was constructed on the site of a former Norman motte-and-bailey and incorporated part of the town’s fortified walls, creating a unified defensive and administrative centre.
The castle has played a key role throughout history—from housing royal administrators to serving as the site of the investiture of the Prince of Wales, most famously that of Prince Charles in 1969. It was never completed as originally planned, but its unfinished grandeur only adds to its character.
Today, visitors can walk along the lofty battlements, climb spiral staircases inside the towers, and take in sweeping views over the Menai Strait and surrounding countryside. The Eagle Tower, with its triple turrets, offers some of the best vistas and insight into the castle’s military function. Inside the castle, exhibitions tell the story of its construction, the Edwardian conquest, and its later use as a royal stronghold.
Also housed within the castle is the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, detailing the history of one of the British Army’s oldest regiments, with collections of uniforms, weapons, medals, and personal stories from soldiers across the centuries.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a family exploring Welsh heritage, or a visitor soaking in the dramatic architecture, Caernarfon Castle offers a rich and immersive experience. Its size, symbolism, and strategic setting make it one of the true crown jewels of Wales.
