Skomer Island
Just off the coast of Pembrokeshire lies Skomer Island, a wildlife paradise famous for its unspoiled beauty, dramatic coastal scenery, and spectacular seabird colonies.
Managed by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, this rugged island offers one of the best wildlife experiences in the UK and an unforgettable day out for nature lovers.
Between April and July, Skomer becomes home to thousands of nesting puffins, drawing visitors from around the world who come to see these charismatic birds up close as they waddle across paths and dive from cliffs. The island also hosts one of the world’s largest manx shearwater colonies, as well as guillemots, razorbills, and grey seals.
Once ashore, visitors can explore a network of footpaths that crisscross the island’s windswept terrain, offering stunning views of sea cliffs, wildflower meadows, and hidden coves. With no cars, roads, or shops, Skomer is a peaceful, off-grid escape where the rhythms of nature take centre stage.
Boat trips depart from Martin’s Haven, and crossing times are weather-dependent, with visitor numbers strictly limited to protect the fragile ecosystem. A small number of overnight stays are also available for those wanting a deeper immersion into this wild Welsh sanctuary.
