Devil's Bridge
Nestled in the Cambrian Mountains of mid-Wales, Devil’s Bridge is a place of dramatic natural beauty, steeped in legend and awe-inspiring views.
A mythic past, breathtaking scenery, and roaring waterfalls.
Located just 12 miles from Aberystwyth, this famous site is home to three stacked bridges, built one above the other across a deep gorge carved by the River Mynach.
According to local legend, the original bridge was built by the devil himself in exchange for the soul of the first being to cross it, only to be tricked by a clever old woman and her dog. Today, this spot is a magnet for curious visitors, photographers, and lovers of wild Welsh landscapes.
The highlight of any visit is the 'Falls Nature Trail', a circular walk that takes you down into the gorge via the steep Jacob’s Ladder staircase and along narrow paths beside thundering waterfalls. The route offers unforgettable views of the Mynach Falls, where the river plunges nearly 300 feet into a misty chasm. It’s a challenging but rewarding trek, not suitable for those with limited mobility, but well worth the effort for adventurous walkers.
Visitors can also explore the shorter Punchbowl Trail, which provides easier access to the dramatic rock formations and swirling waters below the bridge.
After your walk, relax with a drink or a meal at the nearby tearooms or take a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway, a heritage steam train that links Devil’s Bridge with Aberystwyth.
