Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle is one of the greatest medieval fortresses in Britain.
It's the largest castle in Wales by area.
Built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare to secure his claim to Glamorgan, the castle is a masterpiece of military architecture, featuring concentric defensive walls, massive gatehouses, and an elaborate system of moats and artificial lakes.
The stronghold played a key role in the struggles between the Anglo-Normans and Welsh princes and was a model for later castles, including those built by Edward I. Despite centuries of conflict and decline, much of the structure remains impressively intact. One of its most famous features is the dramatically leaning south-east tower, often dubbed 'Wales’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa'.
Visitors can explore the extensive grounds, climb towers, cross the moats, and learn about the castle’s turbulent past through exhibitions and displays. The inner ward often hosts medieval re-enactments, events, and seasonal activities. Surrounded by water and framed by rolling hills, Caerphilly Castle offers an unforgettable experience for anyone interested in history, architecture, or legendary Welsh landscapes.
