Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle is a striking blend of over 2,000 years of history, right in the heart of Wales’s capital city. Originally a Roman fort, later a Norman stronghold, and finally transformed into a lavish Gothic Revival mansion in the 19th century, it’s one of the most fascinating and unique castles in the UK.

The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort.

The medieval keep sits atop an artificial motte, offering panoramic views over the city. Surrounding it are the spectacular Victorian apartments created by the Marquess of Bute, filled with intricate carvings, stained glass, and rich decoration that reflect an extraordinary imagination and wealth.

Visitors can explore Roman remains, climb the keep, walk along the battlements, and descend into wartime shelters hidden within the castle walls. The interpretation centre and regular tours provide insight into the site’s long and layered past, from Roman soldiers to WWII air raid precautions.

Whether you're interested in military history, ornate interiors, or simply want to enjoy one of Cardiff’s most iconic landmarks, Cardiff Castle offers a compelling experience in the middle of the modern city.
