Carnedd Llewelyn

Standing at 1,064m (3,491 ft), and the tallest mountain in the Carneddau range. Set deep in the northern part of Eryri (Snowdonia), it offers a true wilderness experience, often quieter than the more visited central peaks like Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Its summit sits on a broad, rocky plateau, giving wide-reaching views across the national park and as far as the Isle of Man and the Lake District on a clear day.

Carnedd Llewelyn is the second-highest peak in Wales.

Named after Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales, Carnedd Llewelyn holds a strong connection to Welsh history and identity. Reaching the summit typically involves a demanding mountain walk, with common routes starting from Ogwen Valley or Aber, often taking in Carnedd Dafydd along the way. The terrain is rugged and exposed, with steep ascents, high ridges, and vast open spaces that can quickly become disorienting in poor weather.

This is a mountain for experienced hikers, rewarding those who are well-prepared with stunning solitude, dramatic landscapes, and the sense of being on top of one of the wildest parts of Wales.
