Stock Ghyll Force
Tucked away in a peaceful wooded gorge just a short walk from the heart of Ambleside, Stock Ghyll Force is one of the Lake District’s most accessible and picturesque waterfalls.
This 21m cascading waterfall is a hidden gem.
Stock Ghyll Force flows dramatically through moss-covered rocks and ancient trees before joining the River Rothay.
The route to the waterfall begins near the old Salutation Hotel and follows a well-marked footpath through enchanting woodland. Along the way, the soothing sounds of rushing water and birdsong guide visitors to a series of viewing platforms that offer impressive glimpses of the falls from different angles. The walk is short (15-20 minutes each way) but includes a moderate incline and a few uneven steps, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Stock Ghyll Force is a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers, especially after rainfall when the waterfall is at its most powerful. In spring, the woods come alive with a colourful carpet of wildflowers, while autumn transforms the landscape into a blaze of golds and reds.
Although the path is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams, it’s a rewarding mini-adventure for families, couples, and solo walkers looking to experience a peaceful corner of the Lake District with minimal effort.
After visiting the falls, why not enjoy a bite to eat in one of Ambleside’s many cosy cafés or explore nearby attractions.
