Grasmere Gingerbread

In the heart of Grasmere village, stands a tiny 17th century schoolhouse where Grasmere Gingerbread has been baked since 1854. Created by Victorian baker Sarah Nelson, this unique cross between a biscuit and cake has become world-famous, made fresh daily to her original secret recipe still known by only one baker today.

World-famous Grasmere Gingerbread is only made here!

The shop’s nostalgic interior, fragrant with spice, draws long but quick-moving queues of eager visitors. As well as gingerbread, the shelves are filled with handmade toffee, fudge, rum butter, preserves, ginger beer, and Lake District-themed gifts. Friendly staff are on hand, and guided tastings and group visits can be booked in advance.

Open most of the year (closed Christmas, Boxing Day, and Good Friday), it’s a delicious, atmospheric stop on any visit to the Lake District.
