Black Moss Pot

Black Moss Pot is a striking natural plunge pool tucked into Langstrath Valley, just beyond the village of Stonethwaite in Borrowdale. Surrounded by smooth rock walls and fed by a flowing beck, the pool is popular for wild swimming, with crystal-clear water and a depth of around 6m in places. It's also a favourite among confident jumpers, thanks to its natural ledges - but caution is essential, as depths and currents vary.

This is a truly memorable spot for adventurous visitors seeking a remote and beautiful corner of the Lake District.

The walk begins in Stonethwaite and follows the river upstream for about 2.1 miles (3.5 km) each way, taking roughly 1.5-2 hours there and back. The route passes through peaceful Lakeland scenery and past smaller cascades like Galleny Force before reaching the narrow gorge where the pool lies. Though not technically difficult, the path is rocky, uneven, and can be boggy in sections, so good footwear is advised.

There is very limited parking in Stonethwaite village, with a small number of roadside spaces and a seasonal car park near the campsite. Public facilities are minimal; there are no toilets at the pool itself, and phone signal is weak or absent. Visitors should come prepared with food, water, and warm layers, especially if planning to swim, as the water remains cold even in summer.

The pool can become busy during school holidays and warm weekends, but visiting early or on a weekday offers a more tranquil experience. Despite its growing popularity, Black Moss Pot retains a wild, secluded feel and is best enjoyed with care and respect for the natural surroundings.
