Ty Hyll - The 'Ugly House'

Tucked along the A5 between Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig, Ty Hyll, meaning 'The Ugly House', is anything but ugly.

Legend has it that the owner designed the house to block views of a rival estate.

Surrounded by woodlands and wildflowers in the Snowdonia foothills, this stone cottage is steeped in mystery and legend. Some say it was built overnight in the 15th century to claim ownership of the land, in keeping with Welsh tradition. Others believe it’s simply a quirky, handcrafted home. Whatever its origin, its fairytale charm is undeniable.

Now managed by the Snowdonia Society, Ty Hyll is home to a cosy tearoom and pollinator-friendly garden. The tearoom offers a warm welcome with homemade cakes, fresh scones, and traditional Welsh teas, perfect after a local walk or as a peaceful stop on a scenic drive. Tables spill into the garden in warmer months, where bees buzz around native plants and a short nature trail leads through the surrounding woods.

The cottage also houses a small exhibition about pollinators and conservation, reflecting the site’s focus on nature and education. Open seasonally, it’s a delightful place to pause, connect with Welsh folklore, and enjoy the simple pleasures of tea, cake, and countryside.
