Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones
Tucked between the villages of Newborough and Dwyran on the Isle of Anglesey, the Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones - sometimes called the Giant’s Stepping Stones - form a curious and scenic crossing over the tidal Afon Braint.
Made up of 28 large limestone blocks, this unusual path offers a peaceful riverside escape and a taste of the island’s hidden charm.
The stones likely date back to the 19th century, though their exact origin remains unclear. Today, they serve both as a functional crossing and a popular stop for walkers exploring this quieter part of the Anglesey Coastal Path. The path to the stones is an easy and enjoyable countryside walk, often shared with grazing ponies and birdsong, and rewards visitors with lovely views toward the mountains of Snowdonia.
Crossing the stones requires care as they are widely spaced and can be slippery, especially when wet or at high tide so they may not be suitable for everyone. Even without crossing, the spot is ideal for a tranquil break, a paddle on a warm day, or a photo of the striking landscape.
Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones offer a gentle adventure and a moment of stillness in one of Anglesey’s lesser-known but most peaceful corners.
