Llanddwyn Island
Llanddwyn Island is a magical tidal island off the southwestern coast of Anglesey, known for its sweeping beaches, romantic legends, and wild coastal beauty. Though technically not always an island, it's connected to Newborough Beach at low tide and it feels wonderfully remote, with dramatic views across the Menai Strait to Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Llŷn Peninsula.
Walk through the nature reserve to reach an old lighthouse and ruined chapel.
The island is famously associated with Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, who retreated here in the 5th century after a tragic romance. Her legacy remains in the ruins of a small chapel, which visitors can explore alongside other historic landmarks including a lighthouse, ancient crosses, and old pilot cottages that once housed seafarers.
Walking trails wind through coastal heath and dunes, passing wild ponies and seabirds, and leading to one of the most picturesque settings in Wales. The journey begins with a forest walk through Newborough Warren, a National Nature Reserve rich in wildlife, before opening onto the vast golden sands of Llanddwyn Beach.
Whether you're drawn by the legend, the stunning scenery, or the peaceful atmosphere, Llanddwyn Island offers a perfect blend of history, romance, and natural wonder. Be mindful of tide times, as access is cut off at high tide.
