Aberglaslyn Pass
Aberglaslyn Pass is a dramatic river gorge near the village of Beddgelert in Snowdonia, where the River Glaslyn flows through steep, wooded cliffs. It’s one of the most beautiful and atmospheric spots in North Wales, known for its striking scenery, clear rushing water, and legendary connections.
The path through the gorge is uneven in places so please take care.
The pass is rich in folklore, most famously the tale of Pont Aberglaslyn - the narrow stone bridge at the base of the gorge - which local legend claims was built by the Devil and cleverly outwitted by a local man. In past centuries, the pass was an important part of historic travel routes across Wales.
Today, it’s a favourite for walkers and nature lovers. A popular riverside trail follows the Glaslyn through the gorge, with dramatic rock walls, narrow footpaths, and handrails in some sections. It offers incredible views, with chances to spot birds of prey, otters, and woodland wildlife along the way. For a longer adventure, you can follow a circular walk that takes in Llyn Dinas, Cwm Bychan, and parts of the Welsh Highland Railway line.
The gorge is especially popular with families, photographers, and wild swimmers on warm days. While some paths are uneven or narrow, they reward walkers with a true sense of natural beauty and Welsh myth. Whether for a gentle stroll or a full day’s exploration, Aberglaslyn Pass offers a captivating slice of Eryri's (Snowdonia’s) wild heart.
